PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

KORDON MIST AIR AQUARIUM AIRSTONES are the highest quality aerators available for aquarium and pond keeping. They are for both general and specialized use by the discriminating aquarist who wants premium quality, performance that excels all others, and lifetime service.

Using a matrix of nearly perfect glass spheres which are resin-bonded together in a patented process to provide years of excellent service, these airstones offer new standards of performance and durability over traditional wood, fused-sand and porous-plastic airstones. While traditional airstones disintegrate or become unserviceable within a short time, MIST AIR AIRSTONES withstand deterioration and disintegration even after prolonged use. The glass bead construction is extremely durable. Usually the only part that will need replacing is the airstem. Any length of stiff plastic tubing 3/16" diameter can be used as a replacement.

MIST AIR AIRSTONES are available in three porosities, with Coarse, Medium or Fine air bubbles. While all three grades are useful in fresh or saltwater aquaria, there are advantages to the three different grades besides just the bubble size. Each grade of airstone has a different back pressure which is superior dependent on usage. The Coarse MIST AIR has the least back pressure and requires the least air pressure to operate. Therefore, it will operate on the smallest air pumps with lowest pressure. The Coarse MIST AIR will work the best at greater depths were minimum back pressure is desired to provide air bubbles. The Medium MIST AIR is intermediate in back pressure and the Fine MIST AIR is greatest in back pressure. The Coarse MIST AIR requires the most air regulation when multiple airstones are supplied by the same air pump. The Fine MIST AIR requires the least regulation, and the Medium MIST AIR is in between.

Kordon Coarse MIST AIR airstone is the rugged general purpose airstone with a number of advantages. It is the easiest of the three grades to clean. Its largest bubble size is the best to remove gases (such as carbon dioxide) from the water. It is the best airstone for air columns of undergravel filters because it lifts the most water.

Kordon Medium MIST AIR airstone has the advantage of being the best compromise for size. The medium air bubbles are perferred by many aquarists for finer bubble size in fresh water.

Kordon Fine MIST AIR airstone is the marine airstone par excellence. It provides a beneficial fog of minute air bubbles in salt water just like the natural environment in coral reef surge channels. It is very effective as a sparger airstone in protein skimmers and biological waste skimmers, outperforming the old style wooden airstones. In fresh water the Fine MIST AIR has the same bubble size as the Medium MIST AIR but a greater back pressure

Instructions for Use

KORDON MIST AIR airstones can be connected by standard 1/4" OD flexible tubing to any regular aquarium pump - from the smallest single-tank vibrator pumps to the largest commerciasl units for hundreds of aquaria. The clear stiff airstem tubing in the MIST AIR airstones is press fit into a tapered opening in the body of the airstone. The airstem can be removed by pulling it out with a pair of pliers, provided caution is taken is handling the airstone so as not to break the it. If there is air leakage around the base of the airstem, the airstem can be pressed deeper into the airstone or be pulled out and replaced. For taller aquariums the user may prefer to obtain a longer length of stiff tubing - attaching it to the MIST AIR by a short length of flexible tubing, or attaching it directly to the MIST AIR in place of the short airstem.

MIST AIR airstones resist clogging longer than conventional airstones because of the uniform airspaces between the glass spheres. They can be cleaned easily by thoroughly drying the airstones and then blowing out the dry debris. Also, they can be rinsed in running hot water from the faucet, and dried. Or, they can be soaked in mild bleach solution (four parts water to one part bleach), rinsed thoroughly in tap water, and dried before reuse.

More About Aquarium Airstones

Airstones provide life-esential oxygen to the fish and invertebrates in the water by keeping the surface of the water in constant motion. The action of airstones brings new water to the surface (air/water interface) in which the oxygen in the air can enter and from which harmful gases such as carbon dioxide can be disipated. It is important to note that it is at the surface, where the water is brought in contact with the air, that most dissolving of oxygen into the water occurs.

The concentration of available oxygen in water is extremely critical because there is so little of it in liquids. Air consists of over 20% oxygen, or 200,000 parts per million. Water is, however, entirely different. Normally water has only about 0.0006% or 6 ppm-which is 1/33,333 the oxygen supply in air! This means that fish and other "water-breathing" aquatic animals have had to evolve super efficient mechanisms for getting oxygen out of the water. They usually need a minimum of 4 ppm oxygen for good health, and preferably an optimum over 6 ppm. The conditions are even more rigorous for marine animals, because salt water may hold 2 ppm less oxygen than fresh water of the same temperature. The greater the amount of dissolved salts in the water, the less oxygen it will hold. To make the situation more complicated, the higher the temperature of the water, the less oxygen it can hold. There is about a 1 ppm difference in the amount of oxygen that can be in water at 70? F (21? C) and 86? F (30? C).

Airstones provide even temperatures throughout the aquarium preventing the development of thermoclines by keeping the water constantly mixing. Thermoclines are stratifications of waters into layers with a different temperature in each layer. In addition, during the night aquatic plants take in oxygen in their respiration and give off carbon dioxide. Under certain circumstances the removal of too much oxygen can cause the suffocation of aquarium animals such as fish. Airstones working constantly keep oxygen coming into the water and harmful carbon dioxide dispersing out of the water, maintaining the aquarium water in proper balance.

There are other facts that show how important good aeration is for the proper functioning of aquariums. As mentioned previously, carbon dioxide is removed from the water into the air relatively easily with the vigorous use of airstones. However, the passage of oxygen from the air into the water is much slower; it may take two hours or more to replenish sufficient oxygen into the aquarium water that has a greatly depleted oxygen level.

Another way in which oxygen can be dangerously exhausted is by stirring up the mulm and other bottom debris in old established aquariums. There are large numbers of bacteria in bottom materials, and their renewed activity after gaining access to new food materials and oxygen can greatly lower the oxygen level in the water. Aeration and high levels of oxygen are vital in the process of biological filtration. Aerobic bacteria (bacteria requiring oxygen) in the biological nitrogen cycle require substantial amounts of oxygen and will cease to function below 1 ppm oxygen level in the water. Should a chronic decrease of oxygen occur, aerobic bacterial activity will be replaced by anerobic bacteria (bacteria not requiring oxygen). These bacteria are harmful and will produce toxic products dangerous to aquatic animals. The proper functioning of the biological filter bacteria will thus be impaired.

In addition to regular aeration techniques there are other products to aid fish temporarily from becoming asphyxiated. Oxygen can be quickly and safely added short term to the water in an emergency by using hydrogen peroxide from the drug store. Fish which have been transported long distances and suffer from nitrite poisoning and methhemoglobin problems (oxygen-deprived hemoglobin in the blood) can be treated with KORDON METHYLENE BLUE.
